Trip Overview

Annapurna Poon Hill trek is a perfect choice for the first time travelers, who want to experience Nepalese Himalayas. The trail rewards with spectacular sunrise views on the snow-covered mountains. It offers a cultural diversity of land and people. You walk through tiny villages and pass subtropical forest to reach Poon Hill – the famous viewpoint in the Annapurna region.

Hightlights:

  • Explore ethnic cultures of lower Annapurna regions such as Gurung, Magars
  • Spend an evening in Pokhara, scenic city of Nepal
  • See the majestic sun rise/set view on Nepal’s iconic peaks from the Poon Hill.
  • Capture the panoramic views of the mountains, including Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna massif, Mt. Fishtail and more
  • Pass through waterfalls, rice paddies and small villages including Tikhedunga, Gorepani, Tadapani, etc.

Description:

For the Annapurna Poon Hill trek, one does not have to worry about altitude sickness as the focal point is at 3,210 m/10530 ft. From the centerpiece, you can see spectacular sunrise/sunset views on the snow-covered mountain range–Annapurna ranges, Dhaulagiri ranges, Machhapuchhre Himal, Himchuli, Nilgiri, and Mardi Himal.

This short trek starts in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. If you have time, then you can explore the highlights of the city. Next day, you have a flight to Pokhara and start your journey in the Annapurna foothill. However, if you are already in Pokhara, then you can join our group from there too.

The trail passes through glowing rhododendrons, rice terraces, big and small villages of the Annapurna region – Ghandruk, Ghorepani & Ulleri. Similarly, you will climb up and down the famous stone stairs of Ulleri Village. Ethnic Magars and Gurungs are the main inhabitants of this region. You will sleep in comfortable teahouses near villages along the route, which adds a unique experience to the trip.

Annapurna Poon Hill trek is an easy trek. Therefore, any age group of people, from children to old, can do the trek. However, travelers need to be physically fit and in excellent health to do the trek. Also, carrying a great stamina is extremely favorable, as you have to walk uphill and downhill.

The itinerary is doable in December. From the last couple of year’s experience, the December month has been good to trek in the mountains. Though the temperature will be low but surroundings will be clear, rewarding with beautiful views of mountains. Similarly, the sky will be clear. Thus, we suggest doing the Poon hill trek in December. If you want to do longer and more intense trek in the Annapurna region, our Annapurna Base Camp Trek is perfect for you.

Upon landing at Pokhara Airport, you board a private vehicle to NayaPul; the official trekking starting point. From here, your trail heads uphill via fertile farms of rice, maize, and millet fields. On the main path to Birethanti, you will cross a small waterfall. The village is at the connecting point of two rivers–Modi River & Burundi River. Continue hike via beautiful rhododendron and oak forest. You will cross the Burundi River through a bridge before reaching Tikhedhunga.

Overnight at Tikhedunga

You bid for Tikhedhunga village today. After an early morning breakfast and begin stone stairway walk towards Ulleri, which is approximately 3,767 steps. This is the demanding section of the trail, as it really proves a test of our stamina. Once you cross this section, the rest of the trail continues via the scenic area of blooming rhododendron blossoms during spring time and old oak forests throughout the year. Along the way we will see cultivated fields, stunning views of Machhapuchhree (Mount Fishtail Peak) and Annapurna South. Continue climbing until you arrive in Ghorepani, a small Magar inhabitant village. The village in English translation is Horse–Water. It is called that in ancient time it was a stop place for traders for mule packing traveling along the old trade route.

Overnight at a scenic place, Ghorepani.

Enjoy hot drinks with amazing 360-degree views of the Himalayas. After spending a memorable time at Poon Hill, we head down towards Tadapani village that lies at the foot of Machhapuchhree. This peak is the deity of locals, and climbing is forbidden to climbers.

Around 3 hours’ descent from Tadapani, you arrive at the village which is mostly inhabited by the Gurung community. You stop here for a well-deserved lunch and can visit the Gurung Culture Museum. Enjoying spectacular views of Annapurna range, you walk down toward Kimchi. Board a vehicle to Pokhara for around two-and-a-half hours drive to reach the Lakeside city.
